The Aiguestortes National park is one of the most famous parks in the Pyrenees. Aiguestortes, or winding waters, abounds in water as its name suggests: twisting, winding streams, rushing waterfalls and crystal-clear rivers that run through lakes are the stars of the park. But, Aiguestortes is not only water – It lies high in The Pyrenees and is extraordinarily beautiful, with green forests and majestic cliffs, rocks and peat bogs as well as a wide variety of flora and fauna. It is a Pyrenean high mountain ecosystem with more than 200 lakes and crags.  The National Park of Aiguestortes is a paradise for hikers, nature lovers, bird watchers and people who love beauty in the open air.

Access to the Aiguestortes Park is usually from two places – either starting from Espot or from Boi. The park has a large number of marked trails going through the most magnificent scenery. It is also possible to reach the higher points of the Aiguestortes using 4×4 vehicles driven by drivers employed on the site.

Kokopeli Experience has been taking visitors to the Aiguestortes Park for many years. Depending on the season, each visit is planned either for trekking or simply to see the view – in winter, when the forest is snow-covered, the sight is stunning! In the summer the trails are open and a wide variety is open to choose from. Pyrenees – Explore the Spanish Pyrenees

The Pyrenees are an amazingly beautiful mountain range’ a perfect destination for trips, be it on foot, in 4X4 vehicles or even snow-shoes! Kokopeli are expert organizers of quality tours for small and large groups in the north of Spain. We have collected some relevant information for you on this page.

The Pyrenees – an enchanted atmosphere

Have you found yourself in a secluded ancient village in a green valley, surrounded by the wild scenery of snow-capped mountains? Rushing waterfalls? Remnants of snow on the mountaintops? Are the people around you speaking Catalan or Aranese? Is the local food and the wine exceptionally tasty? Then you are probably in another enchanting village in the Pyrenees range.

Traveling with Kokopeli you will be able to visit places not reached by most tourists. This is due to our years-long acquaintance with the people and culture as well as the area as a whole. A tour in the Pyrenees should ideally last at least 3-10 days, depending on your plans and preferences. It should include some of the “must see” spots, lodging in lovely rural guest houses (or hotels if preferred). We organize small groups with optional activities such as wine tasting in local wineries, horseback excursions, kayaking, off-road driving in 4X4 vehicles and more.

The Aiguas Tortes National Park – One of the most famous parks in the Pyrenees. But, Aiguestortes is not only water – It lies high in The Pyrenees and is extraordinarily beautiful, with green forests and majestic cliffs, rocks and peat bogs as well as a wide variety of flora and fauna. It is a Pyrenean high mountain ecosystem with more than 200 lakes and crags.  The National Park of Aiguestortes is a paradise for hikers, nature lovers, bird watchers and people who love beauty in the open air.

The village of Espot is the gateway to this famous national park. The excursion begins with an unusual climb in vehicles belonging to the park, from the height of 1300 meters to the height of 2400 meters (with spectacular scenery on the way). Later the descent is on foot to Lake Maurici, and from there in the 4X4 vehicles to Espot. There are quite a few isolated villages in the area that are well worth visiting – a dinner in one of them can be most enjoyable too.

An impressive example of a well preserved medieval walled town – takes us back in time to forgotten cultures.

Cirque de Gavarnie

An amazing horse=shoe shaped valley created through glacier activity. It is recommended to go on foot to the huge waterfall in the center of the valley. From there it is possible to carry on to the Pont d’Espagne where a series of large waterfalls can be observed. It is usual to continue from there by cable-car up to the Lac du Gaube which is in the heart of the Pyrenees’ and then back to the Spanish side. Many travelers in that area go on to the Basque areas.

Barcelona is the Capital of the Autonomous Catalan Community, and the second largest city in Spain.
Situated in the north-east of Spain, on the Mediterranean coast with an area of 104 sq. km., and a population of 1.6 million, it is the metropolitan center for three million people.

The official languages are Catalan and Spanish.
Barcelona is the second largest industrial city in Spain, a city of commerce and the administrative center: The Catalan Government with its accompanying civil institutions are all in Barcelona. In addition Barcelona is a cultural center and a tourist magnet (17% of the working body are employed in a tourist oriented capacity). The port of Barcelona is one of the busiest in Europe.
In 1992 Barcelona hosted the Olympic Games, a fact that contributed significantly to the urban and economic development of the city.
Barcelona was founded in the year 15 B.C. as a Carthaginian colony. Over the centuries the city has come under many different rules, and the traces of these cultures – Roman, Visigoth, Islamic and others, can be seen in various quarters.

In addition, Barcelona is an important cultural and artistic center, and artists of many different disciplines have worked and are still working there. Among the better known are giants such as Gaudi, Dali, Miro and Picasso.
Barcelona is also famous for its architectural style, known as Moderniste, and the many buildings by Gaudi as well as by other architects are well worth visiting.

Occupying the north-eastern corner of the Iberian Peninsula, the region of Catalonia is highly varied, from the craggy Costa Brava to the mountains of the Pyrenees, and with cities as different as Barcelona, Tarragona, Lerida and Gerona. The mountains aside, in general Catalonia has a milder climate and a lusher flora than its neighbouring regions. Historically, it has been and is an important maritime region, though subordinate to the Crown of Aragón when it was at the height of its influence. Nowadays, it is one of the more prosperous regions of Spain and has far greater influence in Spanish and European affairs than you would expect for its size or its population, a mere 7 million.

Administration and Political Divisions

Catalonia borders Andorra and France to the north, the Mediterranean to the east, the Valencia region to the south and Aragón to the west. It is one of what are called the “historic” autonomous regions of Spain, together with the Basque Country. Its government is the Generalitat. It covers four provinces: Gerona (Girona in Catalan), Lerida (or Lleida), Barcelona and Tarragona. These provinces are in turn divided into comarques.

Geography

Because of its different geographical features and climatic influences, Catalonia is one one of the most varied regions in Spain. The Pyrenees dominate the north of the region, while the south of the region runs from mountainous to hilly to flat, the Ebro Delta in the very south, one of the most important wetlands in Spain, and the fertile plain behind it being the most notable features. Girona is a coastal province, where the influence of the Mediterranean on its climate and nature is evident . Lerida (Lleida in Catalan) is the only wholly inland province of Catalonia, its capital sitting on its very own plain (the Plana de Lleida), south of its Pyrenean foothills which rise up into the mountains proper, east of Andorra. Agriculturally prosperous Tarragona is the flattest, most southerly Catalan province, though the Central System runs into it from the west creating extremely rugged terrains. Barcelona, the most urban of the four provinces with a population of around five million (though less than a third of them live in the municipality of Barcelona itself) is extremely hilly rather than mountainous, but the sheer verticality of Montserrat Mountain is probably its most interesting point. All told, it would be difficult to find a region anywhere with scenery as varied as Catalonia’s.  The region of Catalonia has seven national parks and a big number of protected areas of other kinds.

Traditions

Music: The sardana is the Catalan national folk dance and music, though originally only from the north of the region. It is a circle dance, popular since at least the 16th century. Its music is bouncy, played at jolly andante tempo usually by a sardana band called a cobla.

Correfocs: Firework processions with monstrous figures, particularly devils.

Castells: Castles, spectacular human towers. Six tiers is considered child’s play, nine is not uncommon. Competitions are held, and the real fun comes when they have to get down.

Catalan and Spanish.

Eating and Drinking.

Catalan cuisine becomes quite popular these days, with the top Catalan restaurants such as Ferran Adrià’s El Bulli are right up there with the best in the world. For obvious reasons, Catalan cuisine differs according to whether the area in question is near the sea or up in the mountains, but in general it is essentially Mediterranean, based on fresh vegetables, fish, poultry, olive oil, wine and wheat products – bread and pasta (beef and veal are less common than in Castile, at least traditionally). Butifarra is a Catalan cured pork sausage. Escalivada is sliced, barbecued peppers and aubergines. You will find ali-oli sauce everywhere in Spain, particularly in the form of patatas ali-oli, a budget traveller’s staple, but it is Catalan in origin. Pa amb tomàquet, also called pan tomaca, is lightly toasted bread, rubbed with fresh tomato and sprinkled with olive oil and salt and served with, for example, slices of cured ham. It has become popular everywhere in Spain.

In terms of wine, Catalonia has five denominaciones de origen, including the champagne-method cava, and a number of other wine producing areas. The most notable D.O. is Penedés, which makes worthy reds and excellent, fruity white wines.

Spain is a member of the European Union.

The kingdom of Spain is a sovereign state, member of the E.U. It is located on the Iberian Peninsula and its borders are the Mediterranean, Andorra and France, The Bay of Biscay, Portugal and the Atlantic Ocean.

Due to its geographic position, Spain has been subject to many external influences since the dawn of history.

The Romans conquered the peninsula and ousted the Carthaginians who had held trading colonies along the Mediterranean coast. The Roman rule lasted about 400 years, and with the weakening of Rome their place was taken by the Vandals and later the Visigoths.

The Muslims ruled from the start of the 8^th century for a period of 700 years and were finally ousted with the conquest and unification of Spain under Ferdinand and Isabella. This heralded the Spanish Inquisition as well as the expulsion of the Jews in 1492. This was a period of great discoveries and great religious upheavals. Spain was at that time the great power of Europe with colonies in many parts of the world. The religious upheavals and the ascendancy of Protestantism in some part of Europe eventually brought about the loss of territories previously controlled by Spain.

Spain has known many wars, to name some there was the 30 years’ war, the war of succession and then later, the Napoleonic wars and the Spanish American war.

The 20^th century was no more peaceful, with the First World War, the Spanish civil war after which Franco ruled the country. Spain remained neutral in the Second World War.

The death of Franco brought about the restoration of the monarchy.  Not all was peaceful in that country as there were several separatist nations pushing for national independence – the Basque People, the Catalans etc. Despite this problem, Spain became very strong economically and enjoyed a period of prosperity which is now questionable due to the financial crisis.
